The wind was cool as it ran it's invisible fingers through his dark
brown hair while his even darker eyes stared down at all the people.
Standing on the edge he leaned into the wind and felt as though light
feathered wings brushed him back. A shiver ran up his spine and he
closed his eyes. A picture of his world filled his head with memories.

Only memories.

//Fed up with my destiny
And this place of no return//

His hard blue eyes slowly opened to the solid world before him and he
glanced down off the sure ledge of the tall building he stood on. So
many people have no idea what real pain feels like. They have somone to
go home to, somone they know who cares. Each day complaing of pointless
faults in there pointless lives.

//Think I'll take another day
And slowly watch it burn//

Heero frowned on the tiny specks and stepped off his ledge back to the
secure cemant of the buildings roof. Walking a ways onto the roof he
looked up and watched the hevens above him. The artifical sunset of the
L2 colony showed off brillent pinks and purples, and even though he
watched the clouds roll under them, he never really noticed.

//It doesn't really matter how the time goes by//

Heero ran his battle roughened hands threw his wind touched hair. It was
time to go. He headed to the door off the roof. If only everything was
as easy to leave behind as it was going threw a door. He could still
feel Duos warm breath on his cheast.

//Cause I still remember you and I//

And his soft lips on his mouth.

//And that beautiful goodbye//

**"How much did you drink?" A small smile tugged at Heeros lips.

"As much as you." Duo grinned.

Heero couldn't help it, he grined just as dumbly as Duo.

"I-I" Duo laughed stummbling over the wet curb on the side of the empty
street and Heero grabbed him just in time. Then they walked holding on
to each other in fear of falling.

//We staggered through these empty streets//

"I can't belive your drunk!" Duo laughed.

Heero fought to control himself. "I'm not."

"Yes you are-" Just then Duo slipped and  landed in a deep puddle.

Heero laughed outloud and Duo stared at him for a second before
surrender to his own building laughter.

//Laughing arm in arm//

Both boys had pushed the evenings occurences out of there minds. A
mistake had been made and Duo convinced Heero, somehow, that he knew how
to fix it. The images of torn body parts and the smells of charred
fleash along with melted metal forgotten for the few hours they had
together that night.**

//The night had made a mess of me
Your confession kept me warm //

Waiting in the elevator the japenese pilot listened to the quite ding of
the passing floors. Wondering why fates hands played the way they did.

/And I don't really miss you, I just need to know/

His hard eyes questioning at a ripped picture of his Duo. His world.

//Do you ever think of you and I//

And he could still hear the soft spoken words passed between the two
that night.

//And that beautiful goodbye//

Taking light steps threw the deserted lobbie he pushed the glass door
open and stepped out into the cold nights air. Pulling up his coller
Heero walked down the frost bitten sidewalk, his worn shoes leaving soft
prints. After several blocks of ignoing the bitting breaze he turned
into a small dim lit building.

"Heero." A young women greeted him at the door. Her face greif stricken
as she quikley slipped out behind him.

"Hilde." He nodded.

Stepping into an empty candle lit room he stood in the door way.

//When I see you now
I wonder how//

Taking a slow quivering breath he walked up the long asle and stopped at
the end lowering his now softing eyes. Candles flickered and cast moving
shadows in the empty room. Heero closed his eyes.

//I could've watched you walk away//

**"Heero?" Duo asked. He sat on the small chair for Heeros desk.

They had finnaly reached Heeros apartment and retreated in from the
rain. Heero searched for dry clothes for Duo while he wheeled around on
Heeros computer chair.

"What?"

"What do you want to be when your older?" The question struck Heero as
odd. He had never really thought about his future. It was always in his
mind that he would die in battle.

"I don't know." Heero found a navy blue t-shirt and a pair of jeans and
tossed them to Duo. "What about you?" Duo stopped spinning around on the
chair.

"When I'm older. I want to . . ." Duo paused, "be with you." He anwsered
quietly and lowering his head.

//If I let you down//

Heero looked at Duo and Duo avoided eye contact. In the small lighting
of the room Heero could see tears in Duos eyes. Why was he crying? Boys
don't cry. He had told him so.

//Please forgive me now//

Heero held him that night, And they promised each other that they'd
always be together.**

//For that beautiful goodbye//

Opening his eyes, Heero wiped away an escaped tear angerly.

//In these days of no regrets
I keep mine to myself//

"I loved you Duo." Heero growled.

//And all the things we never said
I can say for someone else//

"You promised." He ran a caloused finger down Duos cold cheak. What
seemed like hours passed by and just stood and looked at Duo. It was if
he was sleeping.

Leaning over the coffin he pulled the lid over and closed it.

//Cause nothing lasts forever, but we always try//

**"I have to go."

"What?" Heero looked up wide awake from under the warm sheets on his
bed.

"Mission." Duo looked grim.

"The war is over Duo."

"I know but theres one more thing I gotta do."

"Thats stupid Duo, what do you mean?"

"One last mission. I gotta go alone."

"Duo-"

"No Heero." Duo wasn't smiling anymore. He leaned down and gently kissed
Heero on the lips.

And with that he left. Heero followed him out of the building insisting
on what Duo was talking about but Duo insisted back that he promised,
they'd be togther again.

//And I just can't help but wonder why //

"I'll be back Heero. Just chill." Duo waved from the cock pit of his
deathsycth, a faulse smile plasterd on his lips. Heero knew he would. He
didn't know it wouldn't be alive.**

//We let it pass us by //

Heero quiekly left the funeral home.

Tears stung the eyes of the perfect soilder. He ran threw the streets
and into his apartment building all the while cluching the wrinkled
picture in his hand. Duos face shone brightly on the torn photograph.

Before he could regester where he was his feet had lead him to the edge
he had stood on so many times before. He had handled it all up to this
point. He had been in control when Duo left, then went missing.

And he was in control when they brought the body to him. And when he had
seen the bullet holes in Duos chest.

But he couldn't do it any more.

//When I see you now
I wonder how//

Heeros feet left the fimeler edge on the top of the building. Wind
rushed in his ears and he closed his eyes, the ground growing neerer.
After what seemed like forever he was clouded in a warm embrace. Opening
his eyes in surprise he stared up into deep violet eyes. He had stopped
falling. Strong fimelar arms wrapped around his body.

"Duo." Heero understood now. Duo smiled.

They would always be together.

//I could've watched you walk away
If I let you down//

"I'm sorry." Duo whispered as his wings engulfed both boys.

"Me too." Heero whispered back.

Heero never felt his spine shatter into a thousand peices or his skull
crack open along with every other bone in his body as it bouced off the
hood of the small unexpecting car, or hear the truck squeal to a stop
inches from his fallen body, and the people gasping in shock and
surprise. . .

 . . . He was dead before he even hit the ground.

//Please forgive me now
For that beautiful goodbye //
